Figure Drawing With Gesture | Stiff Character Poses? Use Gesture Drawing To Give Them More Movement!
🎓 How To Draw Comics Academy: www.howtodrawcomics.net/academy-membership-plans
In this tutorial, we'll be taking a short break from our anatomy series, and taking a quick trip back to figure drawing - as we delve deeper into gesture drawing.
For many artists, their characters wind out looking stiff, and lifeless - like zombies riddled with Rigor mortis! Their figure drawings lack that fluid sense of movement that makes a character look alive and animated!
Like proportions, gesture drawing is a drawing fundamentals issue that no amount of anatomy drawing or character design tinkering can fix. It's a problem that lies within the skeleton of the figure itself, and so it affects everything layered on top of it.
In this tutorial you'll learn why stiff poses, and robotic looking characters happen and how to harness the power of gesture drawing so that you can avoid it altogether. By the end of this lesson you'll know how to bring your characters to life with more energy and movement than ever before!

Yeah the anti ai guy cuts to the core of the matter - consent. There is no consent given here. Just bc your art is on the internet doesn’t entitle others to it. The fact that we have oligopolies that run all of the social media platforms doesn’t change that whatever they may try to sneak into their terms and conditions

He says he doesn’t mind competing against a computer - well dammit man you should lol! How is that fair or just? Bc some tech executive wants to save a buck you now have to put your skills against a machine?? Heeeeellll no don’t take that lying down. Autoworkers wouldn’t. Steel workers didn’t 100 years ago why should artists?

“It’s stealing my job” you SHOULD give a @@@@ though is my rebuttal - I would go way further then this anti AI guy. This is also a workers rights issue. Artists the most marginalized, underpaid and persecuted labor group throughout history are now being attacked as gatekeepers etc. you absolutely should give a @@@@ if it takes your job bc no one else does. Artists need to stand up for themselves, fight for your right to make a living! Have some dignity

AI Art in its current for takes the one thing that makes art worth doing, the journey the self discovery and destroys that in the most pernicious, opportunistic commercial way. The companies pushing what are essentially Art theft technology have all but declared war on artists. Generative AI creates in the same way humans create art, contrary to the popular opinion that humans “steal” art all the time the process is completely different. Moreover there is nothing about generative AI that is actually AI, it’s an algorithm not articulated intelligence. There are some limited educational uses I can see for the technology but it should banned full stop from commercial use in its current form by the courts

Thank you so much Clayton! And just wanna reiterate what you said at the end - practice! Always! How I draw now is so much better than the way I drew 10 years ago, and the way I drew 10 years ago is so muuuch better than the way I drew 10 years before that. There's no shortcut to 'becoming a better artist', you just have to keep on doing it. It doesn't have to be daily, but always finding time to practice, and draw and sketch shapes, figures, forms, etc. on a near constant basis helps so much in the long run! Every little 'practice' helps - be it a sketch on the reverse side of a parking ticket, a doodle on a tissue paper while waiting for a friend, scribbling on the inside of a notebook during a meeting - just keep on doing it!

My biggest problem with these online art courses whether they're on UA-cam or locked behind a paywall is that I'm wondering how good is the instruction being provided and how long is each individual class. CGMA charges over $699 and your course has an annual subscription of $499. People say you can learn everything about art on UA-cam, but I really don't see how that is possible when most art tutorial videos are 5-20 minutes long with only a few examples. Even the most popular art books you can purchase online try to jam pack everything in 300 pages making the material feel rushed and that your innate talent must be higher than your skill level. I see you show tons of lessons on your website, so my question is how many hours is in each lesson? If it's only 15-20 minutes, I'm going to feel like it's a scam and your ripping me off. For $500, I better be getting a shit ton of content with examples, explanations, ebooks, references sheets. It's like if you cover the fundamentals with 5-10 hour long videos per lesson, with multiple hardcover textbooks including expertly drawn references on each page with easy to understand explanations, your art course will stand out from the rest, especially if money isn't your main goal which for a lot of art professionals sadly it is. Not everybody is a quick learners or an art prodigy, some people need more than just a 1-2 hour video and then it's over time for the next lesson and the further you progress the lessons get more and more challenging which is why I brought up the whole textbook concept.

    • @howtodrawcomicsnet

Thank you for the comment my friend. I'd suggest watching the full video - as I go over exactly what is offered in detail. But as a quick summery, when you subscribe to the HTDC Academy, you're getting 3 new lessons per week, which go up to 4.5 hours each, and are aired live so that you can engage with me and ask questions. You have on-demand access to all lesson recordings... You also get feedback on your art each week and access to a built in community. The How to Draw Comics Academy is not a course... It's a membership - an ongoing education in comic book illustration. Unfortunately no hardcover books. Though... that would be cool. @@AutumnExplorer I appreciate your feedback and input my friend. I'm sure other people have the same concerns - I truly believe in the HTDC Academy and what it can offer comic artists. It's difficult to convey just how much it can offer sometimes though, and I feel left in the dark as to why some artists who really seem super motivated hesitate at jumping on board - I know I would have given anything to have this kind of opportunity back when I was coming up in the game. So if there's any additional insight you can offer - I'd be so grateful! Don't worry about offending me, I'd rather know what I'm missing than be blind to it. Like what matters to you most as an artist? What else would you need to see in the Academy that would push you over the edge?

    • @AutumnExplorer
      @AutumnExplorer 2 місяці тому

@@howtodrawcomicsnet Before I begin, I appreciate our honesty and humility so you are already doing wonders, I'm not even close to achieving all of my artistic goals yet, so If I can help my fellow artists in any way, shape, or form I will do my best. Please heavily consider the following options to improve HTDC Academy... First, you must consider what makes your academy different from all the other big names out there like, CGMA, SVS Learn, Udemy, NMA, Schoolism, Domestika, etc. I've invested time and money into many of these online courses and a few things stand out to me. Lack of skill and Lack of teaching ability and super fast quick paced lessons. It’s like the popular quote/story you’ll hear about… at some point during an artist’s career they choose if they want to create art or teach art and the ones who are expert artists suck at teaching, while the expert instructors suck at drawing. So when you can marry the two, your product is going to feel more authentic and draw in more people. It’s like if you can teach aspiring artists the fundamentals, but you can also teach them how to examine their favorite artists and apply them to their own art. This brings me to my next point. I heard from a popular children’s book illustrator that most artists he encountered can draw, some very well. However a lot of them cannot design. They know nothing about the process of design. You might want to consider exploring not only teaching stylization, but also design. Second, how does one create a superior product? If I purchased a membership to HTDC Academy and immediately gave access to five big textbooks/ebooks on the fundamentals, you’re already showing the consumer that you give a damn. It doesn’t just have to be books either, this comes in many different forms like your curriculum and how flexible it is. Like I said earlier, some people are fast learners with lots of talent, while others are slow learners with a little bit of talent, which means they're going to need more time with you. Proper instruction, practice, critique and community are some of the most vital elements for an artist. What’s another important tool in an artist’s toolbox? Reference. Lots of references and how to use it properly. Providing references, detailed, easy to understand explanations helps a lot. Screw Gatekeeping, either you’re going to teach me all you know from tips and secrets or you're not. Third, I think this could be a game changer. Imagine seeing on UA-cam, the HTDC Academy Podcast. I’m not talking about people talking with each other, I’m talking about a weekly podcast where people can comment on what they want to learn how to draw and then you have people teaching it. For example, Brad comments that he is terrible at drawing sword poses, your instructors break down what the sword looks like, how it's built, and then how your hands look when you hold it. Each time drawing it all out in the studio on paper in full HD glory. Realistic swords, fantasy swords, laser swords you name it, they will draw it and draw it from many different angles. This could take a lot of time, effort, and work, so it's locked behind a paywall. I can understand why. Fourth, I’m going to address this again because I really think it’s very important. Let’s say you like the textbook idea, which you said you did, but it’s too expensive to make and would take too much time to produce many of them covering different topics. Here’s the solution: Create a workbook! Instead of the 500 page giant textbook, you have a 200 page workbook. Like Drawing Fundamentals Workbook: Anatomy of the Head, Books 1-5, Drawing Fundamentals Workbook: Anatomy of the Body, Book 1-7, you get the point. The page count might have shrunk, but you still need to provide the lessons, examples, homework, etc. If you want to charge the consumer for each book, I’ll leave that up to you, however making it affordable once again shows you actually care about us and not just about our money. Please avoid making the book blank for us to draw in, that’s why we have sketchbooks for, lol. I’ve seen some people actually do that in their how to draw books. It’s almost like your creating a superior version of the For Dummies book series, except specifically tailored for artists with proper drawings. That Manga for Dummies book still gives me nightmares, lol. In conclusion, I’m going to check out your academy very soon and if you have all the tips I’ve included in this massive comment (sorry about that), then I cannot wait to join. Thank you for your time, if you need anything else just send me a comment and I’ll respond as quickly as I can. Stay safe and see you soon.

The value that comes to having access to industry professionals, teachers, a community and critique at the tip of your fingers is much more than what free youtube content could provide. @@howtodrawcomicsnetBecause at the moment I'm drawing in the traditional way and I'd like to know if it's possible to draw on a computer with a mouse In other words, if je can draw with the mouse Seeing that when I watch your videos I notice a slider

@@Claude-wd8hiUsing a mouse would not be a good option, since there is No pressure sensitivity Its better to start with a cheaper drawing tablet, you can feel the difference real quick

@@Claude-wd8hi better to stick with pencil and paper than draw with a mouse.

Hi, I have a question. Are you going to be doing ebooks?

Great question! I would absolutely love to - and I'd probably include them in the Academy. What are your thoughts on ebooks vs online courses?

Good question, for ebooks. You just buy them print them out and you have them on hand. As for online courses, it depends. If it is a one time payment the student owns it, has more time to finish it; and makes it easier for them.As for subscription payments, that can sometimes be hard for a student because he or she cannot afford it. But that is just me.

Finally a video they actually explains how the looking down view works. I've been searching for a video like that for a while, and surprisingly there aren't any that explain it. They mostly draw them. I've only found the looking up explanation

Yikes. I liked maybe 5 of those. Keep up the good work though guys! Just because I don’t like it, doesn’t mean someone else doesn’t.
